Our extra-curricular highlights
Debating and Public Speaking
Students at Gordon West Public School have the opportunity to develop their communication and critical thinking skills through our Debating and Public Speaking Program.
Each year, students participate in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, local and state Debating Competitions, and inter-school events. They also have the chance to attend Debating Camp and other enrichment opportunities, building confidence, teamwork, and the ability to speak with clarity and purpose.
Creative and Performing Arts: Dance
Gordon West Public School is very proud of its exceptional Dance program, renowned for its very high standard. Students have the opportunity to join a dance group where they develop skills in technique, creativity, and performance quality. Our Year 6 HPGE Dance Group also enjoys many external performance opportunities, including the Schools Spectacular. All dance groups perform at school events and assemblies and are a highlight of our annual Showcase performance. Being part of a dance group also promotes physical fitness, self-expression, confidence, and teamwork, while building friendships and a strong sense of belonging.
Creative and Performing Arts: Choir
Our school choirs provide students with the opportunity to develop vocal techniques, build confidence, and nurture a love of music. Choir members perform regularly at school events, as well as at festivals, the School Spectacular, and prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera House. Being part of a choir also supports students’ wellbeing, fosters connections with others, and strengthens teamwork and collaboration.
Creative and Performing Arts: Band and Strings
At Gordon West Public School, students have the opportunity to develop their musical skills through our successful Band and Strings Program.
From Year 3, students can join the Training Band before progressing to the Concert Band and Senior Concert Band, which perform at school and community events. Students may also join the Strings Ensemble, learning violin, viola, cello, or double bass in a collaborative setting.
The program has a proud tradition of excellence, with students building confidence, teamwork, and a love of music.
K–2 Design and Make Club
Our K–2 Design and Make Club offers students a fun and creative opportunity to bring their ideas to life. Working in a supportive, collaborative environment, students share and develop ideas, plan their design concepts, and then create unique products ready to market and sell.
The process encourages problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork as students learn to design, make, and reflect on their creations. They gain valuable experiences in planning, perseverance, and communication, while also developing an early understanding of entrepreneurship.
Through this program, students not only explore their imagination but also build confidence, resilience, and pride as they see their ideas transformed into real products for others to enjoy.
Chess Club
Chess Club at Gordon West Public School provides students with the opportunity to enjoy social chess in a fun and supportive environment. Open to players of all abilities, the club encourages strategic thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance while fostering respect and sportsmanship.
Students can challenge their peers, and even their teachers, building confidence and resilience as they test their skills. Chess Club is a wonderful way for students to connect with others, sharpen their minds, and enjoy the challenge of this timeless game.
Gardening Group
Students have the opportunity to join our Gardening Group, where they learn about sustainability, the environment, and the life cycle of plants. Through hands-on experiences, students develop responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. They particularly enjoy harvesting fresh produce and selling their products, gaining real-world learning in healthy living, enterprise, and community contribution. Being part of the Gardening Group also supports wellbeing by encouraging outdoor activity, connection with nature, and a sense of pride in their achievements.
Student Leadership – Student Representative Council (SRC)
At Gordon West Public School, students in Years 2–6 have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through our Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC encourages students to give back to the school and wider community, identify ways to help others, and lead creative initiatives that make a positive impact.
Through participation, students build confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility while having a real voice in shaping school events, projects, and programs.
Trips and Excursions
At Gordon West Public School, our students love getting out of the classroom to explore, learn, and try new experiences. These exciting opportunities help students connect their learning to the real world, build confidence, and develop new skills.
Throughout the year, students participate in a range of excursions tailored to each grade. This includes overnight camps for Years 4 and 5, a three-day Canberra excursion, and many other local and educational outings. Every trip is designed to expand students’ knowledge, inspire curiosity, and create lasting memories beyond the classroom.
